In the marble mountains that surround Carrara, a thrilling car chase occurred through the Fantiscritti marble quarry, best known in the world for being the favourite source of marble for Michelangelo’s masterpieces. Starring in one of the most dangerous scenes ever shot for a movie was the British actor Daniel Craig, alias James Bond, in the latest episode of the 007 saga, “Quantum of Solace”.
Cameras hanging from steel cables at tens of metres from the ground were used to shoot this scene, for which a staff of 300 people worked.
While shooting all the sequences, the film production management ensured maximum safety for the stuntmen who starred “in one of the most dangerous and challenging situations ever experienced", as explained by Dan Bradley, the director of the crew that shot the most spectacular scenes.
One of the most thrilling scenes was a car chase at breakneck speed through the marble quarries, in which Agent 007’s famous Aston Martin was chased by powerful Alfa Romeos. Such a difficult environment required continuous car repairs, and this is why the team of supporting technicians was particularly large.
Since a car couldn’t survive a crash against marble, as many as 7 identical Aston Martins were available to the troupe.
A Panoramic P 28.8 was called out to recover crashed cars. This specialised vehicle performed really well on the steep and winding roads through the Fantiscritti marble quarries.
